Boyd Shares Your Values
Quality Public Education
As a product of the Utah public school system, Boyd is committed to supporting a quality public education system that will benefit generations to come.
He will focus his attention on three goals: reducing class size, increasing per-pupil spending, and raising teachers’ salaries. Utah voters recognize that education is the glue that holds our society together. Educating our children produces higher wage-earners, stronger parents, and committed citizens. Utahns know that by supporting quality public education we make Utah stronger.
Ethics in Government
Boyd will fight for ethics reform, legislation requiring personal and professional accountability from elected officials.
Utah valley residents deserve representatives that practice the same ethical standards that voters teach their children and those ethical standards can only be enforced if they are on the law books. We need representatives that are accountable to the voters not beholden to lobbyists.
Protect Senior Citizens’ Rights
Boyd believes that we need to honor the commitments we have made to our senior citizens and protect Social Security from attempts at privatization. He also recognizes that most Utahns rely on more than just Social Security and will work to prevent Enron-style abuse of retirement savings plans. Utah’s seniors deserve to live with dignity and self-reliance, and Boyd will be a strong advocate for seniors’ concerns.
Health Care Reform
According to census bureau estimates, Utah’s uninsured rate (17.4%) is higher than the U.S. rate (15.8%). Between 2001 and 2006, the uninsured rate for children grew at a rate of 63.3%. Because Utah has a large number of small businesses, this rate is only likely to grow unless there is serious health insurance reform. Even for those with health insurance, the costs are growing higher, with premium costs rising five times faster than wages. Boyd believes we need to work to create quality, affordable, comprehensive health care coverage for all people in Utah. No families should be forced to choose between feeding their children or taking them to a doctor, between paying their mortgage or paying for prescriptions.
Managing Utah's Growth
As Utah’s growth rate continues, so do increased traffic congestion, school crowding, a decreasing water supply, and encroaching development on open space. Utahns want to preserve the quality of life we enjoy in this state, particularly in the Utah valley. Boyd believes that growth must be managed with conscientious stewardship.
Sensible and Compassionate Immigration Reform
Boyd supports the position of the Utah county Democratic party that “those who come to the United States should do so legally.” But he also believes, as does his Church, that immigration reform needs to be made in a way that is “thoughtful,” “factual,” and “humane,” exercising a “spirit of compassion.” Boyd does not condone taking away in-state tuition privileges from undocumented immigrants, which punishes the innocent children of these immigrants, creates deep ethnic divisions in our communities, and leads to increased crime.
